Conservative responses to the limited release of files involving the Jeffrey Epstein case have been sharply divided, with certain backers of the previous administration pointing out the prominent appearance of Bill Clinton and other Democrats in photographs, while others expressed frustration over how extensive censorship portray Donald Trump and GOP members in a negative light.
Administration Justifies Censorship with Fervent Hyperbole
Justice Department officials justified the redactions with fervent hyperbole. “Never in U.S. the nation's history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Department of Justice been so transparent with the American people about such a delicate legal issue,” stated Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who released a six-page memo outlining the censorship procedure.
Concerns Raised by Redactions
While Trump's identity and likeness appear in some of the documents, the widespread black blocks prompt significant questions about the information may be hidden beneath them. Some conservative lawmakers immediately called for increased transparency.
“People are raging and walking away,” posted Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a social media post, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie asserted the censorship violate the statute, and suggested that a future Congress may attempt to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Regrettably, today’s document release grossly does not comply with both the intent and the wording of the act,” he added.
A Faction of Conservative Commentators Swing Behind the Disclosure
But, a segment of conservative pundits and former President allies swung firmly in support of the administration.
The release—from a DOJ run by key Trump ally Pam Bondi—includes hundreds of documents that are entirely censored, and numerous of the men depicted in photographs have their faces blacked out.
Yet some are not, including high-profile individuals like Bill Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, especially, allowed certain conservative figures to launch the offensive.
“This is quite ironic how the political left wrongly claimed Donald Trump of being a pedophile, only for the Trump DOJ to unveil Epstein files that show Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a pedophile,” stated right-wing activist Laura Loomer.
“Recently released documents reveal Bill Clinton shirtless in a hot tub with a woman that is not his wife Hillary Clinton,” wrote lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There is only one reason Epstein would photograph a US President with a young woman in a hot tub: Leverage.”
Clinton Spokesperson Issues Response
Bill Clinton has repeatedly said he was aware of no criminal actions by Epstein and has not been alleged to have engaged in any wrongdoing. “The White House has not been concealing those documents for an extended period only to dump them at the last minute on a weekend to shield Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s spokesperson Angel Ureña said in a statement.
“This is about protecting officials from future revelations, or from what they will try and conceal permanently. Therefore they can release as many low-quality decades-old photos as they desire, but it isn’t about Bill Clinton. Never has, not ever be,” the response added.
Broader Rightwing Comment Seems Muted
However, overall comment on the political right was relatively subdued following the release, especially when juxtaposed against the loud calls for transparency that preceded the congressional approval to enact a law mandating the files' publication.
The commentator, who recently secured media access at the Defense Department, had been among the loudest advocates for a complete release. Earlier this year, she chastised the Justice Department broadly and Bondi specifically after a set of rightwing personalities were provided hard-copy binders of materials that included little new data.
