Each time a prominent honors show draws close, one notices an outcry for the addition of new categories to recognize overlooked contributions and satisfy the passions of fans with niche passions.
Another commentator previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. So would tabletop games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist when I prioritize because like all dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case supporting my request remains most pressing and important of all. Here's the proposal: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and typically generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason cinema institutions don’t do it. But it is an essential concession for the industry of video games, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.
To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.
Existing Game Classification System
Leading game ceremonies currently feature genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these classifications actually cover a lot of ground, making space possible for most games within them.
This doesn't apply to puzzle games. No suitable classification appears to put them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. What category would fit them between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Recognition Challenges
Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games published annually lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested independent game categories.
- A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated in any category that year
- Another creative title missed out in 2019
- Popular arranging title was overlooked in 2021
- Limited numbers of brain-teasers scraped into independent or mobile categories
Value of Brain-Teasers
These are often compact experiences, yet the craft in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as most popular titles globally and have been for many years.
The famous puzzle experience competes with famous sandbox experiences claiming status as most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. One could readily select a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude so many good games out.
And to reiterate, these include experiences that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers function at the challenging frontier game development, developing some of most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Just like movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait generations.
